Friends for Therapeutic
Activities (FTEA) was founded in 1996 as a not-for-profit 50(c)3
corporation to provide people with disabilities an opportunity to receive
the many therapeutic benefits from horse-related activities. Documentation
has shown that interaction with horses promotes improvement in human
physical, social, emotional and intellectual skills. Our horses affect
participants in an incomparable way. Contact with our horses makes many
participants, regardless of disability; feel accepted, capable, free from
limitations and empowered.
Friends
We serve participants from
throughout the Chicago area.
Our organization relies upon specially trained volunteers to help with
riding lessons, horse care, office tasks, and many other essential
functions. With the support of donors, volunteers and staff, we work
together to help participants realize their fullest potential.
Therapeutic
Therapeutic riding enables
participants to explore maximum levels of independence through physical,
emotional, and social stimulation. Improvements are witnessed in muscle
strength, range of motion, ability to focus, and communication skills.
On a physical level, sitting astride a walking horse approximates a normal
walking gait in the human torso muscle group. Mastering verbal skills, such
as “walk on,” are stepping-stones to increased communication skills.
Guiding the horse with hands, legs and seat develops fine and gross motor
skills that lead to further independence. And, the self-esteem that comes
from working with horses is unmatched.
Equine
It is the spirit of the horse
that is so effective in motivating FTEA program participants to try new
things.
Only a small percentage of horses have the temperament necessary for this
demanding work. What might send other horses reeling; these special equines
take in stride. All FTEA mounts are meticulously screened and chosen for
their level disposition, willingness to work and affinity for people. They
are trained by our experienced staff to gently and patiently accept the
unpredictable behavior of riders and activities taking place in the arena
during a lesson.
Activities
Lessons take place in either our
outdoor or indoor arenas. Lessons are designed to challenge each individual
using fun, interactive games and activities, such as painting the horse
with finger-paints or steering through an obstacle course. Lessons incorporate
stretching, twisting, balancing, strengthening, staying on task and
following directions.
FTEA lesson activities provide opportunities to all participants for
therapeutic benefits in cognitive, physical, emotional and developmental
challenges.
